Barkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017) war ursprünglich Ende der 1960er Jahre Student der Landschaftsmalerei an der Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, wo er auch seine Liebe zur Fotografie entdeckte. Doch erst in den 1980er Jahren entschied er sich, von den großen figurativen Gemälden, die zu seinem Markenzeichen geworden waren, zugunsten der Landschaftsmalerei im Freien abzuweichen. In den nächsten zwei Jahrzehnten widmete er sich während seiner Ferien auf Jamaika dem Malen von Ansichten des Landes in ovalen, kreisförmigen und halbmondförmigen Formen. Diese Publikation, die erstmals eine Auswahl dieser Landschaftsarbeiten vorstellt, wird durch einen Beitrag des Kunstkritikers, Kunsthistorikers und Wissenschaftlers Barry Schwabsky bereichert.

Barkley L. Hendricks
