Throughout its history, Virginia's Hampton Roads region has been a haven for a diverse and migratory population, including individuals who have long embraced same-sex love and fluid gender identities. By the mid-1900s, this region became a leader in developing institutions and infrastructure for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Chronicled by Our Own Press, this period saw a surge of creativity and activism that put Hampton Roads on the national map. However, the late 1980s and 1990s brought challenges with military crackdowns and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, resulting in a devastating blow to the local LGBT community's leadership. It wasn't until the 21st century that a resurgence of networking and engagement helped bring the annual Pride Festival to the forefront at Town Point Park in Norfolk.

Charles H. Ford

Charles H. Ford, PhD, is a professor of history at Norfolk State University (NSU). He also serves as the director of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at NSU and as chair of its history department. In the 1990s, his primary research areas were in 18th-century Britain and the Atlantic world, and he published Hannah More: A Critical Biography in 1996. In this century, Ford has pursued and published—along with his colleagues, Cassandra Newby-Alexander of NSU and Jeffrey Littlejohn, once of NSU and now at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas—a number of projects explicitly dealing with the desegregation of public schools in Norfolk, Virginia.
