Edgar Degas, a famous artist from the 19th century, is often linked to the start of the Impressionist movement in Paris. However, he didn't fit neatly into one category and instead developed his own unique style, drawing inspiration from the works of Old Masters, the human body in motion, and everyday city life.

Coming from a wealthy family, Degas helped organize exhibitions of "Impressionist" art but later distanced himself from the group to pursue a more realistic approach. He focused on depicting the bustling streets of Paris and its popular pastimes, like horse racing, cabarets, and, most notably, ballet. Degas created around 1,500 artworks featuring ballerinas, using unusual angles and perspectives. His paintings and drawings showcased the physicality and discipline of dance.

This book explores Degas' remarkable art through illustrations of pieces like Foyer de la Danse and Musicians in the Orchestra. It offers an essential introduction to an artist who forged his own path, creating a world of classical influence, bold compositions, and a deep fascination with movement. Degas' works continue to be admired and have had a profound impact on the art of his time.

    About the Artist

    Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917) was a French Impressionist artist famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas also produced bronze sculptures, prints, and drawings. Degas is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Although Degas is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist, and did not paint outdoors as many Impressionists did.

Degas was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers and bathing female nudes. In addition to ballet dancers and bathing women, Degas painted racehorses and racing jockeys, as well as portraits. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and their portrayal of human isolation.

At the beginning of his career, Degas wanted to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classical Western art. In his early thirties he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.
