Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence presents a new collection of paintings and sculptures that confront the lasting impacts of colonialism, using the fallen figure as a visual language. Inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger's The Dead Christ in the Tomb, Wiley's exploration of death and sacrifice in Western art expands to include global victims of state-sanctioned violence. The haunting and powerful paintings of Black bodies, referencing iconic historical works, serve as a solemn elegy to those who have been silenced and ignored. Through the lens of European art history, Wiley sheds light on the violence against Black and brown bodies around the world.
  • Published to accompany the exhibition, The Archaeology of Silence, at the Venice Biennale 2022
  • The exhibition was also shown at San Francisco's de Young Museum in 2023
