Renowned painter Jacob Lawrence is lauded for honoring the everyday lives and struggles of African Americans throughout history. He famously depicted the lives of notable figures, such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and John Brown. The Life of Toussaint L’Ouverture, his earliest narrative series, portrays Toussaint's progression from being a child slave to a general who helped lead the Haitian Revolution. It draws on historical events to illustrate Lawrence's own contemporary Black experience, and was composed of 41 panels in 1936-1938. Fifty years later, he re-created it as 15 silkscreen prints, displaying his deep connection to the series' innate themes. This calendar includes 12 of these prints, ensuring Toussaint's story and Lawrence's vision live on.

About the Artist

Jacob Lawrence

Jacob Armstead Lawrence (1917 – 2000) was an American painter known for his portrayal of African-American historical subjects and contemporary life. Lawrence referred to his style as "dynamic cubism," an art form popularized in Europe which drew great inspiration from West African and Meso-American art. For his compositions, Lawrence found inspiration in everyday life in Harlem. He brought the African-American experience to life using blacks and browns juxtaposed with vivid colors. He also taught and spent 16 years as a professor at the University of Washington.
