An insightful exploration of John Singer Sargent’s early development as an artist in Paris, the city that shaped his creative vision and propelled him to become a leading figure in nineteenth-century art.

In 1874, the eighteen-year-old American artist John Singer Sargent arrived in Paris to pursue painting. A decade later, he gained widespread attention with his provocative portrait Madame X at the 1884 Salon. Sargent and Paris centers on this critical early period when Sargent earned acclaim for his daring portraits and innovative works that challenged artistic norms. Featuring eight authoritative essays by leading Sargent scholars, the book examines his life in Paris—the cultural hub of the era—and the diverse circle of artists, writers, and discerning patrons who shaped his career and artistic identity. The authors illuminate Sargent’s relationships with prominent figures of the Parisian art world and the influential supporters vital to his growth as an artist. Accompanied by over one hundred exquisite images of paintings and works on paper from both public and private collections across the U.S. and Europe, this volume provides a detailed look into the foundations of Sargent’s distinctive style and the formative experiences of his youth in the French capital.
