John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American painter who spent little time in the US. He grew up in a privileged, somewhat nomadic family living in Italy and France. Exposure to European art from an early age guided his exquisite paintings that captured both everyday life and portraits with drama and elegance.

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was an influential American artist known for his remarkable talent as a portrait painter. Born in Florence, Italy to American parents, Sargent displayed artistic abilities from a young age and received training in Europe. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and later attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he honed his skills and developed a refined technique.
