About Cat Designer Verrier

Catherine Labonté graduated from “Cégep du Vieux Montréal” receiving both a Fine Art diploma, 2001, and a Glass Art diploma (Espace Verre) in 2002. During her school years, she developed many different techniques as glass blowing, cast glass, sculpture, engraving glass, lost wax image tranfert and kilnforming. She was deeply inpired by her childhood from cartoons. Always kind of “funny” the characters, that she creates, are a technical challenge. In 2008 Catherine Labonté received Montréal’s François-Houdé award, after being a finalist for 4 years. She also received a Niche Award 2007 in the USA. Since 2002, she has been actively involved in the glass and cultural community, creating and exhibiting a variety of original characters in glass.

"Cartoons were always part of my life. As a child I was fascinated by their simplicity and antics. Originally I began by copying popular cartoons to entertain my friends. Eventually I began creating my own characters, in particular, cats.

During my studies in fine art, these small characters continued to be my first source of inspiration.

I could have pursued illustration but I wanted to give three dimensionality to my characters. In order to do this it may have been a more practical choice to use a different medium, but none attracted me more than glass.

I use glass because of the simple lines, the brightness; it’s translucent and colourful nature as well as for the technical challenges. With it I hope to create objects that evoke laughter and wonder in order to lighten the heart."
