As a renowned expert in the field of graphic arts, M.C. Escher embarked on his first trip to Italy during the 1920s and ultimately made Rome his home for 12 years until 1935. This period in Rome greatly influenced his later work, which focused on lithographs, etchings, and depictions of landscapes, architecture, and the fascinating sights of ancient and Baroque Rome. Escher's exploration of this captivating city often took place at night, illuminated only by the soft glow of lantern light.

Explore the lengthy career of Escher with this comprehensive volume that showcases over 300 of his works, including famous pieces like Hand with Reflecting Sphere and Bond of Union. Released in conjunction with an exhibition at Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome, this book also delves into his early designs and lesser-known 12 Roman Nocturnes series. Escher's unique and captivating art has captured the hearts of not only art enthusiasts, but also those with an interest in mathematics, geometry, science, design, and graphics. Considered a visionary in his own right, his work appeals to diverse audiences and solidifies his place in the history of art.

About the Artist

M. C. Escher

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898 – 1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who made woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints, many of which were inspired by mathematics. Despite wide popular interest, for most of his life Escher was neglected in the art world, even in his native Netherlands. He was 70 before a retrospective exhibition was held. In the late twentieth century, he became more widely appreciated, and in the twenty-first century he has been celebrated in exhibitions around the world.
