This enamel pin draws inspiration from Louis Comfort Tiffany's iconic stained glass composition, which scholars believe references Lillian Nordica, the celebrated American opera singer (1857–1914). Nordica's connection to the artwork stems from her prominent performances in Verdi's Aida at New York's Metropolitan Opera between 1894 and 1906, during which her costuming echoed the draped elegance captured in Tiffany's glass design. The pin commemorates this intersection of operatic history and decorative arts, making it a meaningful accessory for museum enthusiasts and art history aficionados.

Commissioned by Captain Joseph Raphael De Lamar, the window captures the Ethiopian princess Aida, under a pergola adorned with wisteria vines. Tiffany's use of vivid colors, textured opalescent glass, and sinuous lines epitomize the Art Nouveau aesthetic of the era.

Louis Comfort Tiffany

About the Designer

Louis Comfort Tiffany

Louis Comfort Tiffany was a leading figure in American design during the Gilded Age, best known for his work in stained glass. The son of jewelry magnate Charles Lewis Tiffany, he brought a distinct artistic vision to interior decoration, glassmaking, and the decorative arts. In 1885, he founded Tiffany Studios in New York City, where he assembled a talented team of designers and craftspeople. Among them was Clara Driscoll, who supervised the Women's Glass Cutting Department and played a major role in designing the studio’s celebrated lamps and glass objects. While Tiffany’s name became synonymous with the style, many of the studio’s most iconic works were the result of close collaboration between gifted artisans whose skill and creativity helped define the American Art Nouveau movement.
