Spiderflower, officially an annual but can self-seed, making it perform like a perennial. Reaching 3-4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 meters) high, it's a standout in annual gardens. Its colors of pink, purple, white, and lavender are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies during the summer. Growing it from seed is a breeze, and it loves full sun, needs little attention, and is tough against insects and disease. Also called Cleome or the Queen of Pinks or Violets, it can handle extreme weather, making it perfect for outdoor gardens, and is unbothered by deer and rabbits.

Sow in the Spring, after the danger of frost has passed.
While not required, seeds can benefit from special 7 to 14 day treatment called cold stratification prior to planting them.
Seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Seeds should be planted ⅛ inch deep and left uncovered.
Space 3 inches (7.6 cm) between seeds, and space 18 inches (45 cm) between rows. Thin to 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) apart when plants are 3 inches tall.
With good soil and mulch, no additional fertilizer is required.
