Ursprünglich 1978 vom Künstler Gilbert Baker entworfen, um den schwulen Stolz in San Francisco zu feiern. Eine von Bakers Regenbogenfahnen befindet sich in der Sammlung des Museum of Modern Art.

Laut den Schöpfern sollen die Farben Folgendes darstellen:

Rot steht für Leben.
Orange steht für Heilung.
Gelb steht für Sonnenlicht.
