Originating in South America, petunias were first discovered in Argentina and quickly captured hearts with their stunning beauty. As a member of the Solanaceae family, they are related to tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers, and known for their dazzling blossoms across various types. What makes petunias truly unique is their ability to self-pollinate, meaning they can reproduce without outside help. However, they still attract bees and butterflies with their vibrant blooms. These charming flowers also invite in hummingbirds, adding lively movement to your garden. With their tubular flowers providing a ready source of nectar, petunias are like sweet treats for these swift and fluttering creatures.
These versatile annuals will add a pop of color to any sunny hanging baskets, mixed containers, or landscape beds! Their vibrant 3 inch (7.6 cm) blooms make for stunning groundcovers, perfect for trimming walks and beds. They look great on their own or paired with other plants in containers and hanging baskets, adding beauty to any setting. For quicker coverage, planting them closely together is recommended. These flowers are tough and can handle heat and drought, making them the epitome of both resilience and beauty in the garden.

Petunia seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Gently press seeds into soil without covering and keep soil wet. 5-6 weeks after sowing seeds, transplant seedlings into 3 inch (7.6 cm) pots and grow in cooler temperatures with plenty of light. Transplant seedlings outdoors after soil warms to about 60℉ (15℃).
-
Gently sprinkle seeds with water.
-
Pinch young seedlings back to encourage branching.
-
Fertilize regularly and deadhead any spent blooms.
