The ancient Persians utilized graceful gooseneck containers to store rosewater for sprinkling on food, or use as cosmetics and medicine. Inspiration likely struck Tiffany upon seeing these vessels, leading him to incorporate the shape into his designs. He pushed boundaries by employing his signature favrile glass, known for its mesmerizing, vivid colors and intricate patterns, into all pieces hand-blown in his Queens, NY studio.

Louis Comfort Tiffany

About the Artist

Louis Comfort Tiffany

Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts. Throughout his career he forged a unique style that combined excellent craftsmanship with a love of nature forms and brilliant color. Though he worked with a multitude of mediums, he is best known for his work in stained glass. This beautiful design pairs Tiffany’s most famous medium with his favorite motif: the peacock. Peacock feathers featured countless times in both his personal life and his professional career. Renowned for their beauty, peacocks have both religious and secular appeal, making them the ideal design motif for Tiffany’s ecclesiastical commissions.
