Henri Matisse, trained in classical techniques, infused his traditional background with a distinctly modern perspective. This fusion produced a bold new style characterized by vivid, flat color fields and striking linear forms, challenging his peers and securing his place as a pivotal figure in 20th-century art. Throughout his career, Matisse’s evolving approach to familiar themes—portraits, still lifes, nudes, and intimate domestic scenes—continues to engage viewers. The artworks featured in this calendar are selected from the Barnes Foundation’s renowned Matisse collection in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

About the Artist

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954) was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.
