"Static Motion" Squeaky Dog Toy

Cedric Mitchell is a Los Angeles-based glass artist whose vibrant creations seamlessly blend the bold aesthetics of 1980s pop culture, street art, and mid-century modern design. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mitchell's journey into glass art began unexpectedly while recording music in a Tulsa studio. Intrigued by the medium, he enrolled in a glassblowing course at Tulsa Community College, which led to an apprenticeship and teaching role at the Tulsa Glassblowing School. His passion and dedication propelled him to Los Angeles, where he honed his craft under the mentorship of renowned glass artist Joe Cariati.

Mitchell's distinctive style, dubbed "Modern Funk," is characterized by stacked geometric forms and a vivid, candy-colored palette. His works are both playful and precise, reflecting influences from Memphis Milano design to 1990s streetwear fashion.

In November 2024, Mitchell was featured in the Chrysler Museum of Art's Visiting Artist Series at the Perry Glass Studio. During his residency, he led engaging demonstrations, collaborated with university classes, and participated in the Museum's dynamic Glass After Dark program.

The Chrysler Museum proudly holds Mitchell's piece Static Motion (2023) in its permanent collection. This work exemplifies his Modern Funk aesthetic, showcasing vibrant, architectonic compositions that evoke the creativity of childhood play. Static Motion stands as a testament to Mitchell's innovative approach to glass art and his ability to infuse traditional techniques with contemporary flair.
