Lin Yu-shan, The Lotus Pond

About the Artist

Lin Yu-shan

Lin Yu-shan 林玉山 (1907–2004) was a prominent Taiwanese painter known for blending traditional Chinese ink painting with modern sensibilities. Born in Chiayi during Japanese rule, Lin studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he mastered both Western and Eastern techniques. He became an influential figure in the development of Taiwanese art, particularly in the promotion of nihonga (Japanese-style painting) adapted to local themes. Lin's works often depict Taiwan’s landscapes, flora, and indigenous peoples with delicate brushwork and refined color. As both an artist and educator, Lin played a vital role in shaping modern art in Taiwan throughout the 20th century.
