Pintado en 1888 mientras Van Gogh se hospedaba en Arles, Café Terrace at Night representa la Place du Forum. Esta es la primera pintura en la que utilizó fondos estrellados; luego pintó cielos llenos de estrellas en Starry Night Over the Rhône (pintado el mismo mes), y el más conocido The Starry Night un año después.

En una carta a su hermana, van Gogh escribió:

“Ahora hay una pintura de la noche sin negro. Con nada más que hermosos azules, violetas y verdes, y en estos alrededores el cuadrado iluminado es de color azufre pálido, verde limón. Disfruto enormemente pintando en el acto por la noche. En el pasado, solían dibujar y pintar la imagen del dibujo durante el día. Pero encuentro que me conviene pintar la cosa de inmediato”.

La pintura ahora reside en el Museo Kröller-Müller en Otterlo, Países Bajos.

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (1853 — 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his death at 37 came after years of mental illness, depression and poverty. Today, van Gogh is one of the most widely recognized and celebrated artists in the world.
