Originally designed in 1978 by artist Gilbert Baker to celebrate gay pride in San Francisco, the original version had eight stripes. Turquoise and hot pink were dropped over time for various reasons (including the difficulty of sourcing nylon in those colors). One of Baker's Rainbow Flags is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
