Piet Mondrian's artistic evolution led him to reduce his paintings to their core elements. He described his method as "the destruction of natural appearance" and "construction through continuous opposition of pure means—dynamic rhythm." In one such painting, the precise balance of color and structure evokes the elegance of a prima ballerina on pointe. This harmonious composition embodies Mondrian's pursuit of refined form and captures the essence of his abstract language.

About the Artist

Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian (1872 — 1944) was a painter who was an important leader in the development of modern abstract art and a major exponent of the Dutch abstract art movement known as De Stijl (“The Style”). In his mature paintings, Mondrian used the simplest combinations of straight lines, right angles, primary colors, and black, white, and gray. The resulting works possess an extreme formal purity that embodies the artist’s spiritual belief in a harmonious cosmos.
