The breeding of colorful koi fish originated in Japan during the 1820s. The term "koi" derives from Japanese, where it simply translates to "carp." In Japan, these fish are more precisely referred to as "nishyikigoi," which directly translates to "brocaded carp." Additionally, the Japanese word for "koi" sounds similar to a term associated with "affection" and "love," giving koi fish a symbolic representation of love and friendship in Japanese culture.
