Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) is widely recognized as one of the most renowned American artists of the twentieth century. As a member of the second generation of postwar abstract painters, she is credited with pushing the boundaries of abstraction through her innovative soak-stain technique and her unique incorporation of figuration and landscape elements.

This revised and expanded edition of John Elderfield's influential monograph (Frankenthaler, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1989) has been updated and supplemented for the twenty-first century. The book now features updated text and a new chapter covering Frankenthaler's work post-1988, as well as over 300 full-color reproductions of her artwork, nearly 100 comparative illustrations, and documentary photographs. As with the original publication, this is considered to be the definitive volume on Frankenthaler's career, written by the foremost authority on her body of work.
