An ancient name for Japan was Akitsu-shimu or "dragonfly isle". Dragonflies symbolize good luck and were believed to be the spirit of the rice plant. Here they adorn a paper lantern, an integral part of Japanese culture. The 500 year old Feast of Lanterns, or Obon, ends with floating illuminated lanterns down rivers.
