Barkley L. Hendricks
Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) was a highly acclaimed American artist known for his captivating portraits that celebrated the beauty, dignity, and individuality of Black people. Born in 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Hendricks developed a passion for art from an early age and pursued his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Yale University.
Hendricks' unique artistic style combined elements of realism, portraiture, and contemporary fashion, resulting in vibrant and visually striking compositions. His subjects, often family members, friends, or individuals from his community, were depicted with meticulous attention to detail, capturing their personalities and self-assured presence.
