William Seltzer Rice
William Seltzer Rice (1873–1963) was an American artist known for his beautiful woodblock prints, especially of nature scenes. He was born in Pennsylvania but moved to California in 1900, where the landscapes and natural beauty greatly inspired him. Rice worked as an art teacher in Oakland and loved sharing his knowledge with students.
Rice was deeply influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, which valued handmade art and simple, natural designs. He created detailed prints of flowers, trees, birds, and California scenery. His woodcuts were admired for their strong lines and harmonious colors.
Throughout his life, Rice not only made art but also wrote books about printmaking techniques. He helped make block printing popular in America and encouraged others to try it. Today, his prints are collected and celebrated for capturing the beauty of the natural world in a clear and graceful way.
