Winfred Rembert, a rural Georgian native, crafted vivid, complex artworks that tell stories of recollections, sight, and rejoicing—essentially, a pictorial diary of his emotions and experiences. The oppressive, often illegal, Jim Crow laws left an immense impact on Rembert that he channeled into his work, from early years of cotton picking, unjust imprisonment, and near lynching, to a later appreciation for his family, friends, and beloved wife Patsy, who encouraged him to use leather-tooling to confront his hardships through art. His extraordinary portfolio reflects the power of slavery, segregation, and racial injustice, while also commemorating the outstanding hard work, unity, and happiness of the African American culture. This wall calendar preserves 12 pieces that mark the most meaningful people, places, and moments in Rembert’s life.
