Intrigued by their colorful attire and customs, Robert Henri created several pictures of this gypsy and his family while traveling in Spain. Henri’s simplified style, with bold contrasts and thick brushstrokes, stands in sharp opposition to contemporary Impressionist paintings like Susan Watkins’ Marguerite, created roughly the same year. To Henri and his followers, Spanish subjects and a dark palette signified admiration for the realistic detail of Spanish Old Master paintings and a break from standard Parisian ideals of beauty.

Spain held a special allure for Henri, and the artist traveled there seven times between 1900 and 1926—more than to any other country. He once declared that Spain was “the most interesting foreign country in which to work.” Multiple visits to the Prado and a thorough study of the country’s old masters influenced the artist’s style of realism and, by extension, helped earn him his reputation as America’s greatest portraitist.

The print comes with an acid-free off-white picture mat, with a backing board. Sealed in plastic with an identifying sticker on the back. Can be displayed as-is, or easily framed in any 11 x 14 in. frame.
