Klimt "Hygieia" Socks
Regular price
$20.00
Medicine is one of four paintings Gustav Klimt painted as a commission for the University of Vienna in 1901. It depicts Hygieia, the goddess of health, cleanliness, and hygiene. Upon its initial display in Vienna, it was attacked by critics and the ensuing scandal resulted in Klimt resigning his commission. Ultimately, the paintings were stolen by the Nazis in 1938, and presumed to have been destroyed in a fire in 1945 as the SS retreated. Only one photograph and a few preparatory sketches of the series remains.
