Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (1866 - 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, best known as a pioneer of abstraction. He was a member of the art group, Der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) when he created the color study Square with Concentric Circles in 1913.
