Oscar-Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) was a French painter and founder of the Impressionist movement. The philosophy of the Impressionists was to express one's perception (or impressions) of nature, especially as captured en plein air (painting in the open air).

Water Lilies (Nymphéas in French) is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings depicting his flower garden at Monet's home in Giverny. The Water Lilies series was the main focus of Monet's career in the last thirty years of his life.
