Im Laufe ihrer Geschichte war die Region Hampton Roads in Virginia ein Zufluchtsort für eine vielfältige und wandernde Bevölkerung, darunter auch Personen, die sich schon seit langem für gleichgeschlechtliche Liebe und fließende Geschlechtsidentitäten einsetzen. In dieser Zeit kam es zu einem Aufschwung der Kreativität und des Aktivismus, der Hampton Roads auf die nationale Landkarte brachte und von Our Own Press dokumentiert wurde. Die späten 1980er und 1990er Jahre brachten jedoch Herausforderungen mit sich, wie militärisches Durchgreifen und die HIV/AIDS-Epidemie, was der Führung der lokalen LGBT-Gemeinde einen verheerenden Schlag versetzte. Erst im 21. Jahrhundert verhalf eine Wiederbelebung der Vernetzung und des Engagements dazu, das jährliche Pride Festival im Town Point Park in Norfolk in den Vordergrund zu rücken.

Charles H. Ford

Charles H. Ford, PhD, is a professor of history at Norfolk State University (NSU). He also serves as the director of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at NSU and as chair of its history department. In the 1990s, his primary research areas were in 18th-century Britain and the Atlantic world, and he published Hannah More: A Critical Biography in 1996. In this century, Ford has pursued and published—along with his colleagues, Cassandra Newby-Alexander of NSU and Jeffrey Littlejohn, once of NSU and now at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas—a number of projects explicitly dealing with the desegregation of public schools in Norfolk, Virginia.
