Helen Maria Turner

Helen Maria Turner (1858–1958) was an American painter known for her portraits, landscapes, and scenes of women and children. She was born in Kentucky and raised in Louisiana. Turner studied art in New York and Europe at a time when few women were able to pursue professional art careers.

She became associated with the American Impressionist movement, using light and color to create soft, thoughtful images. Many of her works were created during summers at the artist colony in Cragsmoor, New York. Turner won several major awards and was one of the few women elected to the National Academy of Design in her time. She lived to be 100 years old and left behind a respected legacy as both an artist and teacher.
