Dorie Hanes
Dorie Hanes is a Virginia-based crochet enthusiast whose whimsical yarn creations blend craft, color, and charm. Her handmade donut keychains—miniature, multicolored treats made entirely of yarn—were inspired by a chance encounter with the Art-O-Mat at the Chrysler Museum of Art. “I don’t really consider myself an ‘artist,’” Dorie says, “but I do enjoy crocheting.” That enjoyment blossomed into action after a visit to the Museum in January, where she first learned about the Art-O-Mat’s mission to feature small works by local makers. Dorie developed a prototype, gained approval, and lovingly crocheted, packaged, and sent hundreds of tiny donut keychains for distribution in Art-o-Mat machines. In March, her delightful keychains arrived at the Chrysler, and with one satisfying “kerplunk,” she officially joined the Art-O-Mat family. “The whole concept is so fun and unique,” she says. “I encourage everyone to participate—either as an artist or a consumer!”
