Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was a French painter known for his bold use of color and dramatic scenes. He was one of the leaders of the Romantic movement in art, which focused on emotion, imagination, and powerful storytelling. Delacroix’s most famous painting is Liberty Leading the People, which shows a woman holding a French flag as she leads a group of fighters during a revolution.

Delacroix traveled to North Africa in the 1830s, and the colors and cultures he saw there had a lasting influence on his work. He also painted many scenes from literature, mythology, and history. His energetic brushwork and love of color inspired later artists, including the Impressionists. Delacroix is remembered as one of the great painters of 19th-century France.
