Edward Steichen’s In Exaltation of Flowers is an elaborate portrait of the members of a close-knit group of artists and friends who gathered around the couple Agnes and Eugene Meyer, who commissioned the mural. Inspired by the book The Intelligence of the Flowers (1907) by Symbolist poet and playwright Maurice Maeterlinck, the group nurtured a deep interest in the emblematic and spiritual power of flowers. They adopted floral nicknames for each other, and throughout the mural, each sitter is associated with botanical specimens that highlight features of their personality and character.
On view February 23 to November 28, 2021
