 Not So Still Life

By Kimberly McKinnis & John R. G. Roth

A glass artwork inspired by Bowl of Apples on a Table by Henri Matisse, a piece in the Chrysler Museum’s permanent collection.

Kimberly McKinnis and John R.G. Roth created memorable balancing acts of hand-blown and sculpted glass fruit and fragmented furniture “readymades” inspired by Henri Matisse’s Bowl of Apples on a Table. The pedestal base features a wooden table form, precariously stacked with vibrant pieces of glass fruit in unexpected tints and tones. A brilliant jade green pear sits atop a rich garnet apple, and blown glass roundels throughout add whimsical movement and dissect the space further. The sculpture stands approximately 17 3⁄4 inches tall (45cm).
